Known Trivia

  • Although she was required to shoot long 7-minutes takes, Marion Cotillard found the experience the most rewarding that she’s been a part of. She recalled shooting certain takes 50-60 times, the record being 82 takes of the same scene. 25 of 26 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Marion Cotillard is the most famous actress that the Dardenne brothers ever worked with and for the first time they cast an international A-list star. Cotillard is also the first non-Belgian actor to ever work with the directors. According to Luc Dardenne, he and his brother Jean-Pierre Dardenne knew that Cotillard was a great actress, but what interested them was transforming her body, familiar from her other films and from her advertising for Dior, and instead creating a character they had never seen her play before on film. 16 of 16 found this interesting Interesting? • Marion Cotillard had to change her French accent to Belgian for the film. 15 of 15 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Marion Cotillard accepted to star in the film before reading the script. 12 of 12 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The original idea for the film came in the early 2000s, when the Dardenne brothers read about a real-life case in a big French factory. There was a worker whose production output wasn’t good enough for the other workers to get their bonuses, so that person was let go. They heard about similar cases in Belgium, Italy and USA, and they all raised the question of solidarity. 12 of 12 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • Marion Cotillard first met directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne in 2011, on the set of Rust and Bone (2012) – the Dardenne brothers were co-producers on that film. They met Cotillard by chance, coming out of an elevator holding her baby, and were won over immediately. They looked at each other and said, ‘We would like to work with you’. Driving back to Li├Ęge, Belgium, they didn’t stop talking about her: her face, her look…, Luc said. “Hiring such a famous actress was an additional challenge for us. Marion was able to find a new body and a new face for this film,” Jean-Pierre added. 9 of 9 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • This is the sixth film by the Dardenne brothers to be nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, but for the first time one of their films left Cannes empty-handed. Although the film and especially Marion Cotillard’s performance got unanimous acclaim at the festival and was seen as the obvious winner of the Best Actress prize. Critics and the audience claimed that Cotillard was robbed of an award or at least a special mention for her performance. 9 of 9 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
  • The film is set and was shot in Seraing, an industrial town in Liege, in Wallonia, the French-speaking region of Belgium where the Dardenne brothers were born and raised. Their previous films were set in Seraing as well. 8 of 8 found this interesting Interesting? Yes No |
