Known Trivia

  • Andy Samberg, Justin Timberlake and Patricia Clarkson all previously appeared in the SNL Digital Short/music video for the song “Motherlover”. Clarkson played Timberlake’s mother in it. Emma Stone also previously appeared in an SNL Digital Short. SNL Digital Shorts are pre-taped skits made for Saturday Night Live, which were created by Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer.
  • Director Will Gluck’s previous film was Easy A, which features Emma Stone and Patricia Clarkson as mother and daughter.
  • In the scene where Dylan is going to ask the woman on the stairs out, the musician in the plaza with the saxophone is playing “Just a Friend” by Biz Markie.
  • When Jamie (Mila Kunis) is picking up Dylan (Justin Timberlake) up from the airport at the beginning of the film, she uses an old sign to write his name on it. The original name on the sign was O. Penderghast. This stands for Olive Penderghast whom Emma Stone played in Director Will Gluck’s previous movie Easy A. Stone makes a cameo at the beginning of this film as Dylan’s girlfriend.
  • Justin Timberlake’s character Dylan uses a flash mob for a guerrilla advertising campaign for GQ. He also mentions that he had a contract with T-Mobile for 2 years – the first brand to use that technique in Liverpool Street Station, London, UK.
  • “Bryce”, the male lead in the fictional romantic comedy shown throughout the film is played by Jason Segel in an uncredited role. He also appeared as Mila Kunis’s love interest in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and as Justin Timberlake’s romantic rival in Bad Teacher, both romantic comedies.
  • Mila Kunis used a “butt double” for her character’s full nude scene despite the fact that she appears semi-nude in side views in a handful of scenes.
  • Justin Timberlake’s character has a lightning-bolt tattoo, and Mila Kunis’s character wears a lightning-bolt necklace throughout the movie except in the photo-shoot scene when he is angry with her.
  • When playing basketball, Woody Harrelson is shown dunking. This is a nod to one of the subplots of White Men Can’t Jump.
  • In the scene were Mila Kunis’ character, Jamie, is speaking to Patricia Clarkson’s character, Lorna (Jamie’s mother), about the benefits of free love and how people behaved in the 1970s, you can clearly see the movie Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice playing in the background. This is Paul Mazursky’s cinematic homage to free love and ties in nicely to Lorna’s character “free love” spirit.

Goofs: Continuity: After Dylan see's that Jamie has drawn on his face, he gets her back by drawing on her face with a pen with ink that will only show up under a black light. While he's drawing on her face, he makes what looks like a circle around her left eye. When she is shown, later at her meeting, with the drawing Dylan did on her face, there is no circle around her left eye. Some can say it was the eyebrow he drew, but the eyebrow shown drawn on her is not as circular as what was shown when he was drawing on her.

Plot: While trying to avoid the clichés of Hollywood romantic comedies, Dylan and Jamie soon discover however that adding the act of sex to their friendship does lead to complications. Full summary »  »

Story: Jamie (Mila Kunis) is a New York head-hunter trying to sign Los Angeles-based Dylan (Justin Timberlake) for her client. When he takes the job and makes the move, they quickly become friends. Their friendship turns into a friendship with benefits, but with Jamie's emotionally damaged past and Dylan's history of being emotionally unavailable, they have to try to not fall for each other the way Hollywood romantic comedies dictate.Written by napierslogs
