  • Tobey Maguire was cast as Ward but dropped out because of scheduling conflicts.
  • Alex Pettyfer was first choice for the role of Jack James.

  • It was announced on the 2nd May that The Paperboy’s theme song was written and recorded by Mariah Carey and is called Mesmerized.
  • Pedro Almodóvar was several times approached to helm this project and seriously considered to make it his first English-speaking feature. He finally declined but, allegedly, he participated in early versions of the script.

Goofs: Anachronisms: When Jack and Charlotte are in the car parked outside the prison the song Show And Tell, sung by Al Wilson is playing on the car radio. The scene is set in the late sixties but the song was not written until 1972 and Al Wilson's version was recorded in 1973.
